A mother's arms are made of tenderness
and children sleep soundly in them.

Remembering, I saw her as
she first learned how to walk.
The words that we alone made out
when she began to talk.

If I had you to Raise Again
If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first,
and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more,
and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting
and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch
and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less
and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious,
and seriously play.
I would run through more fields
and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging
and less tugging.
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often.
I would be firm less often,
and affirm much more.
I'd model less about the love of power,
And more about the power of Love.

Grandmother-grandchild relationships are simple. Grandmas are short on critique and long on love.

      TEN COMMITMENTS FOR PARENTS

  1. I will always love and respect my child for who he/she  is and not who I want him to be.
  2. I will give my child space - to grow, to dream, to succeed, and even, sometimes, to fail.
  3. I will create a loving home environment and show my child that he/she is loved, whenever and however and however I can.
  4. I will, when discipline is necessary, let my child know that I disapprove of what he/she does, not who he is.
  5. I will set limits for my child and help her find security in the knowledge of what is expected of him/her.
  6. I will make time for my child and cherish our moments together, realizing how important - and fleeting - they are.
  7. I will not burden my child with emotions and problems he is not equipped to deal with, remembering that I am the parent and he/she is the child.
  8. I will encourage my child to experience the world and all its possibilities, guiding him/her in its ways and taking the effort to make him/her careful, but not fearful.
  9. I will take care of myself physically and emotionally so that I can be there for my child when he/she needs me.
  10. I will try to be the kind of person I want my child to grow up to be - loving, fair-minded, moral, giving and hopeful.

This little girl so much absorbed
In learning how to write.
It seems as though she must have grown
to girlhood overnight.

A Word to Parents
Give a hug or thanks or praise
for the things your children do
Pretty soon they'll be grown up
and you'll be cherishing I love you's
Their little hearts trust you from the start
be grateful that you play a part
in their little lives, don't bribe or chide.
They're very dear, so sigh and cheer
moments to relish I would replenish
if I had the power to regain those hours.
But in my dreams I see sometimes
their little voices sound like chimes.
Give us ever listening ears
to hear their voice and hearts so clear.
Little children meek and mild
some are restless, they like to glide.
Through the day I work without pay
it's a pleasure to watch them play.
Help me to show a picture of their God
in my love and my manner on this earthly sod.
One day they'll be parents, yes I'll see
whether they'll choose to be just like me.

Please understand I am growing up and
changing very fast.
It must be difficult to keep pace with me
but please try.

A Parent's Prayer

They're only little once.
Grant me the wisdom to guide them down the path that their feet should take.
For I know that they can never turn back and
walk those paths with me again.
Give me the wisdom to guide their feet
so that someday they'll be able to walk alone.
They're only little once.
Give me the time I need to enjoy them.
For I know that after they're grown, I'll never
have another chance
to tell stories and pretend at those tea parties.
I'll never have another chance
They're only little once.
Let me be a good teacher and an even
better example.
Give me the right words and deeds to
teach them.
Help me to teach them about You and
how to walk in Your ways
so that when they are old they will not
depart from Your ways.
For they're only little one time,
only innocent and trusting and pliable for
a space of time, one minute in an eternity.

Let me do my best for them while I have the chance.

Always make God a pleasure to your children.
Try not to stifle....and give them space....and
at some time, they will become acquainted
themselves....let them see that He is Good!

Memo from Your Child

1. Don't spoil me. I know quite well that I ought not have all that I ask for, I'm only testing you.

2. Don't be afraid to be firm with me, I prefer it. It makes me feel more secure.

3. Don't let me form bad habits, I have to rely on you to detect them in the early stages.

4. Don't make me feel smaller than I am, It only makes me behave foolishly big.

5. Don't correct me in front of people if you can help it.

6. Don't make me feel that my mistakes are sins, it upsets my set of values.

7. Don't be upset when I say "I hate you", it's not you I hate, but your power to hinder.

8. Don't protect me from consequences, I need to learn  sometimes.

9. Don't nag, if you do I will need to protect myself by appearing deaf.

10. Don't make rash promises, remember I feel badly let down when promises are broken.

11. Don't tax my honesty too much, I am easily frightened into telling lies.

12. Don't be inconsistent, that completely confuses me and makes me lose faith in you.

13. Don't tell me my fears are silly, they are very real to me and you can do much to reassure me if you try to understand.

14. Don't ever suggest that you are perfect or infallible. It gives me to greater dismay when I discover that you are neither.

15. Don't forget that I can't thrive without lots of love and understanding, but I don't need to tell you that, do I?

MORE COMING!

My Little One
My little one, my little one,
Oh, how you all have grown.
I look back through the pages now
for the little ones I have known.

It seems like only yesterday,
when you were learning to stand,
and looked at me with love and trust
as you reached for Mommy's hand.

Oh, why must time rush by me
at such a frantic pace?
Give me just a moment more
to remember that small face.

My little one, my little one,
the days were precious few,
when I could hold you in my arms
and wish the stars for you.

Life is not measured by the breaths you take,
but by the moments that take your breath away.

A person soon learns how little he knows when
a child begins to ask questions.

          Little Eyes
There are little eyes upon you
And they're watching night and day.
There are little ears that quickly
Take in every word you say.
There are little hands all eager
          To do anything you do
And a little girl who's dreaming
Of the day she'll be like you.

          You're the little angel's idol
You're the wisest of the wise.
In her little mind about you
          No suspicions ever rise.
          She believes in you devoutly
Holds all you say and do
She will say and do, in your way
When she's grown up just like you.

          There's a wide-eyed little girl
          Who believes you're always right
And her eyes are always open
And she watches day and night.
          You are setting an example
Every day in all you do
For the little girl who's waiting
To grow up to be like you.

          WALKING WITH GRANDPA
I like to walk with Grandpa,
His steps are short like mine.
He doesn't say "Now Hurry Up,"
          He always takes his time.

I like to walk with Grandpa,
His eyes see thing like mine do -
Wee pebbles bright, a funny cloud,
          Half hidden drops of dew.

          Most people have to hurry,
          They don't stop and see.
I'm glad that God made Grandpa,
          Unrushed, and young like me.

          Grandparents Love
          Few can bring the warmth
We can find in their embrace,
And little more is needed to bring love.
Than the smile on their face.

They've a supply of precious stories,
Yet they've time to wipe a tear,
Or give us reasons to make us laugh,
They grow more precious through the years.

I believe that God sent us Grandparents
          As our legacy from above,
To share the moments of our life,
As extra measures of His love.
